I was skimming a book on how to motivate and reward employees and like many books, it had short, pithy quotes at the beginning of each chapter. One of them stuck with me today and I wrote it down to mull over because I think that it is worthy of reflection.
“What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
My natural inclination is to try to store that away somewhere in the cluttered closet of my mind so that sometime when it fits I can reference it as an illustration. Since I’ve been personally studying the character and leadership of Joshua and David, I think of how our behavior and lifestyle preceeds us in the persons and places we influence.
I also thought of it in light of prayer. Of course, God can always hear us, but depending on our heart towards Him, He may allow circumstances and consequences to occur that are intended to cause us to identify the incongruity of what we say and how we live.
May we aim more and more to do things that say something worth hearing, something that attracts people to the gospel, and something that brings honor to the King.
